Dance has always been a part of Mel’s life. As a young girl, she explored different styles of dance, such as ballet, jazz, and tap. She found herself most drawn to jazz and danced competitively. Later, Mel joined the musical theatre group, Multi-Youth Productions, where she collaborated with members to create original productions and choreography that was frequently shown at The Edmonton International Fringe Festival. During her time at university, Mel became a teacher’s assistant for the University of Alberta Dance Club, joined their formation dance team, and enjoyed ballroom dancing socially. During her years as an elementary school teacher, Mel has always tried to instill a love of dance in her students. Mel taught Intellidance® in Edmonton for two years prior to bringing the program to Calgary. Mel is going into her fourth year of teaching Intellidance®.
Mel has two children who have been attending Intellidance® classes since they were both three months old. During these classes, Mel’s daughter has blossomed into a clever, affectionate little girl who adores interacting with people, and her son has thrived in an environment where he can develop his physical movement skills at his own pace. Intellidance® has supported their physical, social, emotional, and cognitive growth.
Mel holds a B.Ed in Elementary Education from the University of Alberta and a M.Ed in Special Education with a specialization in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education from the University of British Columbia.
Get to know Mel a bit better with these tid-bits:
Mel lives in organized chaos. She cleans by mis-adventure, which is a term her mother coined. It means mopping the entire floor because the kids spilt their milk. Or, vacuuming because a ball hit the potted plant and there’s black dirt everywhere. If her kids didn’t make messes, she’d never tidy up.
She has a “black thumb,” but she’s still trying to grow flowers; thank goodness for tiger lilies that thrive regardless of what she does!
She is a drama queen, which led her to Mutlti-Youth Productions, as mentioned earlier. Now, Mel applies her theatrical training to the lead roles of Cinderella, Stoic from How to Train Your Dragon, and Anna from Frozen in living room performances- they are intense roles to play!
Mel is a prairie girl; if you’re not from the prairies, then you don’t know what that means. She loves to crack the ice during walks in the spring time, watch the “sky-blue-pink” sky in the evenings, and pick dandelions with her kids.
She is a sorority sister. Mel learned how to be a strong, independent woman who believes in herself thanks to her sorority sisters. They also provided her with the scholarship money she needed to complete her Master’s. She still remember the cheers they used to sing during recruitment, the pranks the men’s fraternities played on them, and the philanthropic events they hosted in support of local early learning programs for children. Sororities are nothing like the movies.
Mel is a tea-granny; her cupboards are full of it. Her favourites are Harney & Sons’ Jasmine, iced Roselle tea from Thailand, and any type of Chai tea. Ask her again next week, and she’ll have a new favourite.
In her first life, she was an elementary special education teacher specializing in teaching students who had speech and language delays, and those who were Deaf and hard-of-hearing. She left teaching because she loved her second life as a mother more!
Mel is a tactile person; she loves to run her hands across clothing in shopping centres, she loves to sink her hands into rice before she rinses and cooks it, she loves playing with playdough, water beads, and other sensory materials. If she could, she would own an adult-size ballpit.
She is empathetic. She cries during commercials. She cries during cartoons. She’s seen The Notebook a dozen times, and she still cry through it. It’s one of the endearing things her husband likes about her.
Mel’s husband does not dance, but he did on the night they met at their best friends’ wedding. They’ve been together ever since 2005.

WHAT ARE PEOPLE SAYING ABOUT MEL GIBB?
Mel is a dynamic instructor who is passionate about early childhood development and communication needs. She expertly combines her knowledge and training with a fun, outgoing personality that creates a class both caregivers and children enjoy! Mel always leads with professionalism and heart creating meaningful connections with her participants. It has been my pleasure to work with Mel and I highly encourage other families to take the opportunity to experience a program with her!
Over the past 4 months my daughter and I have been taking parent and baby classes instructed by Mel GIbb. We have take the same class twice, and I found that Mel did an amazing job of not making the class repetitive. She was very creative in changing the songs and actions for the babies, thus keeping it fresh for the parents. She is very enthusiastic as an instructor, and I found my daughter often paying more attention to Mel than myself during the class!! Mel does a great job connecting with the babies during the class and also developing relationships with the parents. I have thoroughly enjoyed our experience with Mel and would recommend taking any class from her.
I had the great pleasure of taking an Intellidance class led by Mel Gibb with my three year old son Samuel, who has a variety of special needs including being completely non-verbal. Ms. Gibb was tremendously inclusive, welcoming Samuel into a class designed for younger students but more appropriate to his developmental level.
She encouraged him to explore the music and his body in ways that were comfortable for him, whether or not this fit in with the intended curriculum, and ensured that the entire experience was as warm, inviting and pleasant for him as it was for the other kids in her program. Driven by an obvious passion for children, and equipped with an equivalent knowledge and skill in early childhood development, Ms. Gibb created an environment of enthusiasm and fun that appeal to kids and adults alike.
I greatly look forward to the opportunity take another class with her and would highly recommend her programs to any family.
